Our strategy aims to protect, connect, and sustainably manage water resources, key freshwater habitats, watersheds, and aquifers in Morocco.

Water resources are crucial in Morocco, a country already experiencing water stress and climate change impacts. With less than 1000 cubic meters of renewable freshwater per person per year, Morocco is classified among countries with high-stress levels. Rainfall is unevenly distributed in space and time. This natural condition, coupled with population growth and climate change, creates a deficit situation where water demand exceeds available resources.

The Freshwater program by Living Planet Morocco (LPM) is committed to the sustainable management and conservation of Morocco’s vital water resources through three primary initiatives: Sebou Water Fund, Environmental Flow, and Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.

The Sebou Water Fund focuses on safeguarding the Sebou River Basin through nature-based solutions. This includes reforestation, soil conservation, and community involvement to ensure a sustainable water supply and enhance water quality. By engaging local communities, the program aims to maintain healthy ecosystems and promote sustainable practices.

The “Environmental Flow for Morocco” initiative emphasizes the importance of maintaining natural flow regimes in rivers to support the health of ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. By advocating for policy changes and practical implementations, the Environmental Flow program aims to balance human water use with the ecological needs of Morocco’s rivers. This approach ensures that water management practices consider the long-term health and sustainability of aquatic ecosystems.

Living Planet Morocco actively supports Morocco’s commitments under the Ramsar Convention, focusing on the protection and sustainable use of wetlands. The program works on designating and managing Ramsar Sites, enhancing conservation efforts, and raising public awareness about the importance of wetlands. By collaborating with national and international partners, LPM strives to ensure that Morocco’s wetlands are preserved for future generations.

Through these initiatives, the Freshwater program of Living Planet Morocco demonstrates its comprehensive approach to water conservation, combining policy advocacy, community engagement, and practical solutions to protect and manage the country’s freshwater resources effectively.
